Papa with no hair came for a short visit at the end of May.

We went on a hike last Saturday at Cliff Cave Park.

It was about 95 degrees and with the humidity it felt like 110.

Despite the heat, we had a great time and saw some really amazing things.

For the past few family nights, we have chosen a different country to learn about. One of the first was Japan. For each country we try to learn some words, watch videos on the internet of traditional dancing, read a children's story or fable, and make a meal from that country.

The girls loved watching the Geisha girls dancing and the story of Momotaro.

Here they are eating some homemade sushi.

For the past few weeks, in particular, Ruby has been putting up a fuss about going to bed. She has never been known for going to bed easily, but recently it has gotten plain ridiculous. For reasons only known to a three year-old, we have been finding her out of her bed and asleep in some pretty unusual places.

One night last week she got up to go to the bathroom, but apparently the prospect of putting her pajamas back on and walking all the way back down the hallway to her room was too much. She fell asleep on the bathmat.

On a few other occasions she must have decided that under her bed was much more comfortable than in her bed.

We've also found her many times sleeping in the big cardboard box in her room. No pictures of that yet, but I'm sure it won't be too long till we find her there again!

A conversation with Ruby the other day during dinner:

"Hey Ruby, let me get you some chapstick for those dry lips," I offered.
"No Mom, I don't want chaptick, I want lipstick," Ruby replied.
"Oh, you mean lip gloss?"
"No Mom, lipstick."
"Lipstick?" Clearly it was taking me a while to catch on, but I was truly confused. Not only do I never wear lipstick, but it is something that we have never talked about and I don't own any, not a single tube.
"Uh-huh. Lipstick is better. It stays on your lips for a long time and it doesn't ever come off."
"So, who told you so much about lipstick?"
"No one, I just know."
"So, do you know anyone who wears lipstick?"
"The princesses," she stated very matter of factly.
"Excuse me?" and I thought I was confused before....
"Yeah, like Cinderella and Belle and Snow White, they wear lipstick and it never comes off."

I had to laugh, in amazement really. She has had such little exposure to all the princess stuff that I was floored that this one detail was important to her. But clearly she had spent a lot of time thinking about it, and to her credit, she's right. Lipstick does stay on for long time, and as far as she knows it never comes off. Chapstick and lip gloss do. So while that none of that will change the fact that I don't own any lipstick and that she won't wear any until she is 21, among all the things that Ruby is sure of, she is also sure of this: lipstick is better.

Emily ran a 1/2 Marathon (13.1 miles) in the spring with some of her friends.

She looked great and finished under her goal of two hours!

While in Minnesota, we went for a walk to a nearby park that had a huge number of geese.
We thought it would be fun to feed them some bread...

at first they were cute...

then Ty threw a couple of pieces of bread and every goose in the park turned to look at us...

and started moving closer...

then it got a little creepy.

This little bugger got too close to Ruby's fingers and Ty had to deliver a swift boot.

In the end the geese got all of our bread, but we got to keep all of our fingers.

A funny thing happens when you've gotten used to winter weather where the highs are in the teens with wind chills making it even worse, 40 degrees all the sudden feels like spring. I realized that today after I put the girls in the stroller and started navigating my way down the ice and snow covered sidewalk to meet some friends at the library. As fall turned to winter you couldn't have talked me into taking a walk with the kids in the weather we had today, but after months of collecting dust in the corner, today seemed like the perfect day for a stroll in the stroller. It was a bit windy and a little slippery, but the sunshine was good for my soul. Tomorrow it's going to be back in the 20's so we had to get out while we could. Oh, and the girls were all bundled up and toasty, so don't you worry about them.

The other funny thing is that we haven't posted anything in almost 3 months. Pretty funny, huh? I know what you really want is pictures of the girls. We'll get some up, pronto.

Apple Pickin'

On Tyler's fall break, we went to a local "pick-your-own-apple" orchard and pumpkin patch. It was great fun. Here are some shots from the adventure.

If you maximize this last shot, you may be able to see the Arch right in the middle, over the horizon. We were all a bit skeptical of the Arch when we moved here. After all, what is it for? But over the past few months we have grown to really love it. It is so elegant and powerful. We have made some great family memories there. Our friend Barack Obama came to play there one Saturday afternoon. Ruby still talks about how Marc and Sunny and Harper went to see it with us and how she gave it a hug. Tyler soundly whipped both Marc and Sunny in backwards foot races on the Arch grounds. Auntie Mel went there to see it with us.
Truly the most beautiful of America's man-made landmarks.

An Interesting Sticker

The other day we had dinner at our friends house. Ruby finished eating before the rest of us and got down from the table. We were having a nice conversation, without realizing that Ruby was being awfully quiet. She was rummaging through Emily's purse and found an interesting sticker. She thought it was really neat and we could not convince her to give it up. She played with it the rest of the night and even stuck it on the car window for the ride home.

Clearly it's been way too long since our last post, and to the grandparents out there, we are sorry. While having a newborn and not having the internet make it difficult enough to post, the worst part is that I feel like I have to post the backlog of pictures before I can begin keeping up rather than catching up. So I've spent a few hours on our front porch, mooching the weak open wireless signal from an unsuspecting neighbor and finally have something to show for it.

Here are the pictures from the month of May. I spent most of that time with the girls in Indiana at Tyler's parent's house while he was taking finals so he could have plenty of time to study and no one to blame if he didn't pass his classes. I was also looking for a little help with the new babe and fortunately we all got what we wanted.

A healthy obsession with tractors

There are countless fun things for Ruby to play with at her grandparent's house, and one of those things was the tractor. While we were there her interest in tractors went from from mild to obsessive.

Helping Papa fix the tractor. He was a little concerned with her 'organizing' of his ratchet set.

I had to include this picture to show her other obsessions, playing kitchen and with this bright pink 'Disney princess' tea set, lovingly provided by her Nana. It violates Tyler's two cardinal rules: no princesses, no pink, but we figure that with the influence of the John Deere we are at least left with a net gain of zero, which is better than it could have been. The kitchen was an incredible find at a yard sale and Ruby played with it almost constantly. One afternoon I even found her taking canned food out of the pantry in the real kitchen and stocking her kitchen out on the deck. She's obviously well aware of the importance of food storage.

Ruby went outside with her papa one afternoon to 'help' plant the garden.

Papa dug the furrow and started placing the seeds in the ground, and Ruby followed behind him, picking up all the seeds and put them in her pocket. After a few minutes she grabbed the stash of seeds from her pocket and threw them in the dirt in one big pile. I think we're all interested to see how the garden will look in a few months.

After that she got her own seeds to plant.

Like any almost-two-year-old she loves playing in the dirt and when it was all finished she looked pretty pleased with herself. All in a hard day's work.

Stella's first awkward stage

Right around three weeks Stella's hair started falling out, and falling out fast. After one day she already lost over an inch off her hairline and I was finding hair everywhere, on her crib sheet, on blankets, in her car seat. I was worried, and with good cause.

Because this is what she looked like only one week later. OK, not the most flattering picture to begin with, but do you see how bald she was?! I know most moms are oblivious to how weird their own kids can look, but not this time. I'll be the first to tell you that she was not that cute at all. We called it her 'George Costanza look' since she was completely bald on top, but didn't lose a single hair around the sides.

So, I've been left to wonder what kind of signal or hormonal change the very top of her head must have gotten to have lost all that hair so quickly....

and why her shoulder and back haven't gotten it yet?

You might notice that is there is poop on her elbow and think that it got there as I was pulling her arms out of the sleeves... and you would be wrong. There was poop IN the sleeve, and I have no idea how it got there. No amount of wipes can clean up a mess like this; the only answer was a bath, and a thorough one at that.

Ruby found the cue chalk on the pool table and got it all over herself, but thankfully was intercepted just as she was about to get to the walls. This picture is mostly to show the tiny little pig tail off the side of her head with a glittery clip. She loves barrettes and asks for them all the time, only to pull them out 20 minutes later.

for six and a half hours! When her little grunts and noises started waking me from sleep I was a little disoriented because it was light outside. It's incredible what your body can get used to; just two weeks ago she had a couple of four hour stretches at night and I really truly felt rested the next morning. Since when is four hours a good night's sleep? Answer: When you have a newborn. Toaday I feel like a whole new woman.

Things I love about new babies, especially mine

- that new baby smell... I can't describe it

- the way she scrunches her little legs up close to her bodies when I pick her up

- those little fleeting smiles (they aren't just gas)

- that I feel like I can stare at her for hours and hours and it would never grow old, if only there were enough time for that

- the way her skin is so soft that it almost feels like it isn't there

We made a trip to the Missouri Botanical Gardens while Grammy was with us last week. Getting there was quite a process by itself. Stella peed on me just as we were about to leave the house and then spit up all over herself on the drive over there. And I'm not talking about just-getting-your-collar-damp spit up, she completely soaked herself. After getting her changed we had a great time.

She has always loved wearing sunglasses and these new ones from Grammy are no exception. She wears them whenever we are outside and at church on Sunday we were able to finally get them off half-way through sacrament.

Moms

I can't say enough about how great it is to have a wonderful mom, and then to be lucky enough to get a great mother-in-law on top of that as well. My girls will be lucky (and I will be too) if I end up being half of what these two women are.
My mom came to St. Louis just after Loni (Tyler's mom) left and it was so great to have her with us. She still amazes me with how easily she whips up a delicious meal and how effortless she makes just about everything seem. She cooked, cleaned, stocked the freezer, played games and read books to Ruby and, like a good mom, made me take naps. I cried when Tyler had to take her to the airport and teared up every time Ruby asked me where Grammy went. I love my mom, especially because no matter how old I get or that I am now a mom myself, she knows just how to keep on mothering in that perfect way that only mothers do.

There aren't a whole lot of things that I like about staying in the hospital, but if I had to choose one thing, it would be the Discovery channel. I think Tyler would agree.
Now if I were to list the things that I don't like about staying in the hospital, the list would be long indeed. But at the ver y top of that list would be shared rooms. When we went on our hospital tour the guide said that they 'seldom' have to place two women in a room together. I don't know what it was about the weekend Stella was born, but there were a lot of other babies who decided to come at the same time, which meant that I got to have a roommate. In many cases I am sure this wouldn't have been an issue, but in this case it was almost comical. It became clear quite quickly that my roommate was dealing with a lot of other serious issues, but what makes this all worthy of a blog post is that our phone lines must have been crossed, so whenever my phone rang I became Shonda's answering service:
me: Hello?
caller: Shonda there?
me: Yeah, can I tell her who is calling?
caller: This is B.
me: (to Shonda) Hey, B is on the phone.
Shonda: Tell him I just tried calling his cell phone and he didn't answer. Tell him I'll call him right back.
me: (to B) Uh, she said that she just tried calling you and that she's gonna call you right now.
B: Tell her my phone is broken and to call me on Lakisha's. She got Lakisha's number?
me: (to Shonda) His phone is broken and he wants you to call him on Lakisha's number and he wants to know if you have the number.
Shonda: I have the number. Just tell him he better answer.
me: Sure, no problem.

A similar dialogue occured at least 5 other times with other callers and I have to admit that I was giggling the whole time I was relaying the messages back and forth. I should have demanded payment for every call I took... one cup of foil covered hospital apple juice per call. Maybe next time.

My good friend Lisa has a 4 year old daughter, Julia, and she and Ruby have the best relationship. Julia loved to do silly things that make Ruby laugh, and Ruby loves for Julia to do silly things that make her laugh (see photos). What a fabulous reciprocal relationship.

Halloween in March?

The other day Ruby insisted on wearing her Halloween costume all day, including to the grocery store and later to the park after Tyler got home from school. You can imagine some of the great looks we got in the aisles and as people passed by in the park. It is still pretty chilly here so it's a good thing the costume is as warm as it looks.

There is a reason why most pregnant women don't take a lot of pictures, and this is a good example! Oh well. 38 weeks.... and counting.

Easter Egg Hunt

About five minutes before we had to leave our house for the Easter egg hunt I had a realization; we didn't have a basket, or anything even close to resembling a basket for Ruby to put her eggs into, which is why she is the only kid in the picture with empty hands. It's always been my thinking that I'm not going to go overboard on things that she won't even remember, but now that there are pictures to document the event there is no disputing the fact that we are bad parents.

Also, notice that there are a few older kids in the bunch, and they proved that they are no dummies. Our friends hid plastic eggs with candy, as well as decorated hard-boiled eggs. When the hunt began the two older boys ran for the eggs and would pick them up and shake them. If they rattled, score; they knew they had candy and the egg went into their basket and any egg that didn't rattle was immediately thrown back onto the grass. That's where Ruby came in. I think she finished the event with 2 plastic eggs and 7, yes, 7 hard-boiled. Egg salad sandwiches anyone?

Ruby ended up storing her loot in a reusable Target shopping bag. So that makes us eco-friendly bad parents. There's always a silver lining.
